Typhoon Warning issued for Marianas
At 8pm Sunday evening the National Weather Service issued a Typhoon Warning for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. While still a tropical storm, the formation named Kong-Rey is expected to intensify overnight and should become a typhoon on Monday. The storm is moving northwest at 13 miles per hour and this general motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are 50 miles per hour.
The Guam Homeland Security Office/Office of Civil Defense is scheduled to hold a heavy weather briefing at 9pm. As of 8:30pm the island remains in Condition of Readiness Level "3", but an upgrade to Condition of Readiness "2" is anticipated after tonight's briefing. All government operations will remain open on Monday.
Guam Waterworks Authority General Manager David Craddick is advising all customers to start storing water. At 12 midnight the water agency will switch all their wells over to generator power. Craddick is advising residents to store enough water for as long as three days.
Military U.S. Naval Forces Marianas and Andersen Air Force Base declared Condition of Readiness "3" at 3pm Sunday afternoon. The military is projecting Tropical Storm Kong-Rey to make its closet point of approach to Guam on Tuesday at 6 in the morning. The military also issued the following announcements:
- All DoDEA schools will be closed April 2 and 3 - All Navy child development centers will be closed April 2 and 3 - The Orote commissary on U.S. Naval Base Guam closed this evening at 8pm. It will be open to authorized patrons on April 2 from 7am-12pm -The NEX gas station on Naval Base Guam will close Sunday evening at 11pm and will be open April 2 from 5am-12pm. All other NEX facilities will be open to authorized patrons on April 2 from 7am-12pm
