The roads, the roads, the roads are making me mad!

by Tony Blaz
KUAM's Political Insider
November 21, 2004

Chris Barnett of i94-FM has a humorous parody, which speaks to the condition of our roads here on Guam. But as humorous as the song by Chris is, he delivers a very effective satirical commentary on the conditions of Guam's roads.

Whether you are a visitor to our island or a resident you can't help but fully experience some of the most horrible road conditions anyone can experience in the world. Anywhere and everywhere on Guam you can't help but treat yourself to Guam's finest or worst, from potholes as large as craters, visitors probably wonder if the hole was a result of a meteor slamming into our island, from speed bumps to steel plates to poor replaced utility hookups, it's unbelievable! But don't take my word for it!

Ask anyone and everyone: "what do you think of Guam's roads?" and you will see I'm right. Another testament to our island's awful road conditions is the number of tire companies that have popped up all over Guam. Pick up a paper and you will find all kinds of companies competing for the many of thousands of customers, who have to fix a flat tire, repairs, alignment, replace their tires, their shocks, and the list goes on and on.

Sound familiar? Yes, I'm sure for the vast majority, we've been there and done that. But what is obviously apparent to all of us who are subjected to such awful conditions appears to be lost upon our leaders. When was the last time you heard from a leader promising to repair your roads or doing something constructive about our road conditions.

We don't have a reliable mass transit system here, of all of us who have to contend with these awful road conditions and the very expensive consequences associated therein. All of this on top of increasing fuel costs and the spiraling costs of just about everything. I say the next time you go to the gas station or to a tire shop to fix an alignment, replace a tire.. Etc… send a copy of your bill to your favorite senator, or the governor, and remind them in two years, you will have a chance to grade their performance, and decide whether you will retain their services or replace them, just like those very expensive tires that you have to replace whenever you have driven long enough on Guam.

Tony Blaz hosts "Positively Local", a radio talkshow on Isla61-AM everyday from 6-10am
