2/22 deadline for real property tax payments

GUAM - Property owners have until Monday, February 22 to make their first installment of real property taxes. Director of Revenue and Taxation Art Ilagan says because the actual deadline falls on a Saturday, residents will be given until Monday to pay the tax. Based on prior history he expects the total tax for the year to equal roughly 24 million dollars and expects to collect about 9 million dollars by the 22nd. Ilagan explains that the department will likely get about 82 percent of what they expect.

Ilagan assessed, "The total tax for 2009 we assess is $24.3 million. Out of that, half of that is due on February 20th which is $12.2 million and out of the receivables or taxes supposed to be paid we usually get about 82% of that so we are expecting on the 20th to get $9 million."

Ilagan says he believes the department has received about 4.7 million dollars to date making the number the department expects on the 22nd to be a little over 5.2 million dollars. Ilagan added that this money is usually used for the territorial education facilities fund, however it will now be allocated for the Department of Education to use since they are short of funds due to funds currently being withheld by the feds.
