Ridley Scott misses the mark with "Robin Hood"

Director: Ridley Scott

Time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Genre: Action

Starring: Russell Crowe, Mark Strong, Cate Blanchett

While Ridley Scott's offering of "Robin Hood" boasts strong cinematography and a darker look at the eagle-eyed bandit, the film fails to keep the audience attentive. At 140 minutes long, "Robin Hood" is a fairly lengthy film. Combine that with the fact that the action comes in very short spurts, and what you have is a pretty poor movie experience.

There really isn't much to say about this film. It follows the story of Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe), an ex-soldier in King Richard's Crusade. He returns home to find England in disarray because of Richard's brother, John. What ensues is 2 hours and 40 minutes of Robin getting acquainted with the town of Nottingham. The fabled characters all return albeit their back stories may be different from what you've been raised to believe - Friar Tuck, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Will Scarlet and Little Jon all appear at some point in the film. However, they are never fully explained.

The one thing that irks me the most about "Robin Hood" is that the action scenes are few and far between. I mean, if you are going to watch an action movie, there better be some action. If you are going to skimp on quantity at least add some quality to the few scenes that are there. Unfortunately Scott completely misses the target with this.

The film is boring. The film wants to arouse the audience with feelings of injustice and revolt but its plot has no direction that all the scenes just come across as tedious. In fact, I'm so inclined recommend that Ridley Scott play the part of Robin Hood himself - he's the one who is robbing the rich and putting our admission into his pocket.

1 out of 5 stars.
