The University of Guam has announced an extension of the 17th Conference on Island Sustainability, also known as CIS2026, adding two days of programming in Saipan through April 26, in partnership with Northern Marianas College.

Originally scheduled to conclude on Friday, April 24, the extension reflects growing regional interest and a shared commitment to address sustainability challenges unique to island communities across Micronesia.

The additional Saipan-based sessions will bring together educators, researchers, policymakers, students, and community leaders from Guam and the CNMI to discuss climate resilience, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

UOG President and CIS2026 Co-Chairperson Anita Borja Enriquez said the extension builds on a long-standing partnership with NMC and expands one of UOG’s premier annual events to include the CNMI community.

NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero added the collaboration supports sustainability throughout the Marianas and highlights NMC’s sea grant status.

Events in Saipan will be organized by NMC and 500 Sails and will include a cultural seminar, canoe experience, sea talks, and a managaha conservation experience.
