Guam - Governor Eddie Calvo has issued a state of mourning through a proclamation for the death of 21-year-old U.S. Army Specialist Calvin Pereda, formerly of Yigo. Pereda was killed over the weekend in Afghanistan. 

Flags were ordered to be flown at half staff in Pereda's honor. The Department of Defense has released information regarding Pereda's death, stating that he died in Kandahar Province from injuries he suffered after encountering an improvised explosive device while on dismounted patrol.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Family members are holding nightly rosaries in Mataguak, Yigo and arrangements are being made to lay Pereda to rest on Guam.
