Guam - In running news, Eddie Vega continues to turn heads in the sport as he runs marathons barefoot. The former Guam resident has ran 5 marathons in 5 days, competed in 36 different states & 5 different countries and has ran a total of 3 marathons completely barefoot just to name a few of his accomplishments.
Vega said, "This will be my 75th marathon out of that it will be 67 full marathons and 8 ultra marathons, which are 50k or greater. My first barefoot marathon was last year December 30th 2012. It started out as a dare and it was my 50th marathon for the year and I was just joking around with the other runners, "hey you know what this is the 5th marathon over 5 days and I only brought 4 pairs of shoes, so I guess I'm going to run barefoot." And so they dared me and I did. It felt so good and I got so mush attention and then I realized with this much attention that I'm getting I thought that this would be a good idea to use it to bring awareness to this foundation that I would like to create for my parents. A foundation that would actually help impoverished children who don't have any shoes or hardly any clothes to wear that are living in the Pacific Islands and the Philippines. So I followed up that run with another barefoot run in about 3 weeks later in Bermuda. I was the only barefoot runner out of about 150 full marathoners. So that attracted so much attention with the spectators as well as the runners and I figured that this is a great way to really create awareness for this charity."
Vega followed up with another barefoot run in Arizona 2 weeks later where he competed against 500 full marathoners. He said that his goal is to run barefoot in Antarctica in a couple of days and to run barefoot in all 7 continents and in all 50 states. His main objective is to create awareness through his running for the less fortunate.
