A routine patrol in Chalan Pago turned into a drug arrest after a K9 unit alerted officers to methamphetamine inside a vehicle.

Police say they stopped a black Toyota Corolla Sunday night along Route 4 for speeding and an expired registration. The driver, identified as 50-year-old Victor Erwin Quichocho, was unable to provide a license or vehicle documents and gave officers conflicting reasons for being in a hurry.

During the stop, Quichocho reportedly consented to a search, but then urged officers to use a K9 instead. That’s when drug detection dog Drako was called in and alerted to the presence of narcotics.

According to a magistrate’s complaint, quichocho then admitted there were drugs in the car, telling officers he purchased methamphetamine with plans to resell it to cover personal expenses.

Officers say the drugs were concealed inside a nicotine pouch, and a scale was also recovered.

Quichocho is now facing felony drug charges, including possession with intent to deliver.

He has since been released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
