As Guam continues recovery following Super Typhoon Sinlaku—the Guam Fire Department is sharing how crews held the line through the worst of the storm. From minimal damage to stations—to dozens of emergency calls—officials say their focus now shifts to community support and helping neighboring islands.

As Super Typhoon Sinlaku barreled through Guam—GFD crews remained on the front lines—responding to emergencies while ensuring their own facilities held strong. Capt. Nick Garrido, GFD spokesperson, said, "As far as the stations, there were minimal damages to all the station, I think the primary concern from the GFD management perspective were moreso the rescue bases alongside the water."

But even with strong infrastructure—calls for help kept coming in. "In terms of runs, we did have a significant amount of alarms in throughout the COR1 duration. We did have a few that were storm related. We did have a few call of rescue and evacuation, telephone calls on fire, activated fire alarms, we also assisted with oxygen dependent patients and transported to either the northern or southern facilities," he said.

Leadership also made sure firefighters—especially those experiencing their first major storm—were checked on. He said, "Each of the commanders assigned to districts or responsibilities to conduct wellness checks to the areas of responsibilities . I do know for some of them, this was their first storm, we do have few new firefighters over the last year or two. So for some definitely it was their first storm, we were fortunate the typhoon spared us."

As conditions improve—GFD says it’s business as usual—with crews ready to support recovery efforts across the island. "We're status quo. This is normal operations for us. For the exception of the storm. However in terms on restoration we don't have too many issues within our stations, or apparatus," he said.

And while Guam moves forward—the department is also looking beyond its shores. "Try to support our brothers and sisters in the Northern Marianas, whatever way possible," he said.

GFD says its priority remains clear—protecting the community—and standing ready to help others still recovering.
