In the aftermath of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, recovery is far from over for many families across Guam. For some, home is now a park, a building, or wherever they can find shelter. And that’s where the Salvation Army is stepping in, bringing relief directly to them.

Major Eric Tumale, corps officer & Micronesia coordinator, said, "By providing meals, we are going outside the community to find the needs, at this time we wanted to fill the gaps, we serve the people that are not at the shelter by providing the hot meals."

Instead of waiting—they’re moving—searching for those who may have been left out or forgotten in the chaos after the storm. "In some areas maybe because they were displaced, they are moving around,we have been serving people in the parks, in the buildings where they are seeking shelter,we are seeing more people in the hagatna area, and also at the Dededo areas, we're working with the mayor's office in Dededo who are informing the members of the community, that the Salvation Army, providing hot meals wherre they are. They don't need to go anywhere, salvation army will go where they're out," he said.

But this mission isn’t just about food—it’s about dignity and comfort especially for children trying to cope with loss. "In times like this we as a community, it's my first time time to experience the disaster on Guam, what im seeing here is Guam is family oriented, we help each other when we're in need. Every one pitches in and everyone can help. Right now we're going to address the needs of the children, children are also displaced, maybe they lost something- maybe they lost their clothes, they lost their favorite toys,we are offering some type of relief to the children, parents we're encouraging you that if your kids needs some toys to give comfort, we also offer some toys for the children,we working with local elementary schools, and local agencies, who can help us spread that we are here to address the nees of the children during the disaster," he said.

And as the need continues—so does the call for help. "Encourage monetary donations so that it's easy for us to continue our ervices . Right now we are serving hot meals, we are catering it we order from one of the local stores,monetary donations woould be the best way on how our community can help us," he said.

Looking ahead—the focus is shifting from immediate relief to long-term recovery. "We are preparing for after care case management - we doing it every Monday and Tuesday from 9am-12pm; we would love to see them from 9-12," he said.

The Salvation Army says its work is far from over—as many families continue to recover in the weeks following Super Typhoon Sinlaku. The organization is encouraging monetary donations to help sustain hot meal distributions and expand support services across the island. Officials say cash donations allow them to quickly respond to changing needs—including food, supplies, and support for displaced children.

They’re also preparing to launch aftercare case management—set for Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon—for those in need of long-term assistance.

For now—the message is simple—help is still available and the community is encouraged to reach out or lend a hand.
