The Guam Micronesia Island Fair is in full swing through the weekend, as many delegations from the region share their culture and crafts. The Pohnpei delegation always very popular with GMIF attendees - their dance, their crafts and one of the big draws every year: sakau.

"We're sharing how we do the sakau on the rock and also the handicrafts Pohnpeians make by their hand and the creative of Pohnpei," said one member of the island nation's delegation.

Sakau - derived from kava plant - is a drink that is made by ceremonially pounding root on a flat river rock. The kava is mixed into hibiscus bark and results in an intoxicating thick drink that sedates the drinker, often leaving the tongue numb and the drinker in an extremely relaxed state. While sakau pounding is a big draw for the Pohnpei delegation, sharing and seeing other Micronesian cultural practices also influences our island neighbors.

"We get some ideas from the other vendors what to do to improve our stuff in Pohnpei," she added.

The Guam Micronesia Island Fair runs until Sunday at the Plaza De Espana in Hagatna.
