Art San Agustin appointed as Public Health director, homeless shelter opens
During today's press briefing at Adelup, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero announced the appointment of Art San Agustin as the new director of the Department of Public Health and Social Services. San Agustin is a long-time Public Health employee who has served in different capacities at the agency, most recently as the administrator of the Division of Senior Citizens. He replaces Linda DeNorcey who recently retired.
Also during the briefing, Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio announced the opening of the long-awaited homeless shelter meant to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the community. Tenorio described it as a new non-congregate shelter at a Maite motel managed by Catholic Social Services. CSS also will be assisting with wraparound services for the clients.
"This is the first in a few of a series of efforts in trying to have a comprehensive approach to dealing with the homeless individuals," Tenorio said. "For the ones that were unsheltered that are sheltered now, these individuals we are sheltering them and protecting them from any community spread from COVID and we'll continue that."
Tenorio said the first family to enter the shelter went in on Friday and about 30 have since been provided shelter.
Today, the governor also said she still does not yet have a date set for the reopening of tourism and mentioned the government will be looking at austerity measures as Guam faces limited resources.
