Statue of Guam's patron saint desecrated by vandals
The southern village of Malesso has an evil Grinch on the loose. On Wednesday night, the mayor's office decorated Guam's sacred statue of Santa Marian Kamalen and Thursday morning, the likeness of our island's Blessed Mother was vandalized.
Malesso Mayor Ernest Chargualaf is at a loss for words and all the island's faithful are in disbelief. "It's disrespectful to our faith and our religion, I don't understand," he said, visibly frustrated. It was a highly disrespectful sight, as the island's patron saint has become a victim this Christmas season.
The Malesso statute was vandalized with metal chains tied around her praying hands. "And whoever did it of all the places he could have hung the chains on they chose to put the chain on the rest of Santa Marian Kamalen," the mayor continued.
Mayor Chargualaf says last night he along with the his staff and community volunteers, decorated the park and statue in lights to spread the Christmas spirit. "We tried to put together a nice display of the park because it represents a sacred place, a holistic place and for an individual to come here and put a chain...I don't know what kind of message he is trying to convey," he said.
The village leader says he plans to set up surveillance cameras in the park and will make sure whoever is responsible will be held accountable.
"And when I catch them, they will pay the price," he promised. "To those responsible, you will get caught one day and I believe when you get caught in my village I will be involved in the forefront to ask that they give you the maximum... that person is given the maximum penalties and fine."
The incident has been reported to the Guam Police Department.
