Guam Men's National Soccer Team preparing for qualifier matches

The Guam Men's National Soccer Team is preparing for their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers in Shanghai, China PR. 24 players have been called up to the Matao with 19-year old Anthony Moon making his debut for Guam.
Moon said, "We're definitely the underdog so we got to come out strong and we have to play hard. No one is expecting a lot from us, except our island so we have to come out and play with a lot of pride and show everyone what we got. I have a lot of pride to play with the Matao and I'm proud to be part of this squad."
The Matao will play its first match of the tournament May 30 against the host country at 7:30 p.m. China PR time (9:30 p.m. Guam time). Guam will next play the Philippines on June 3 and will close out the qualification round against current table toppers Syria on June 11th.
Marlon Evans with the Matao said, "We recently just got these GPS units that we wear on our chest that measures our sprint speed and measures our sprint frequency and distance ran. You can't hide from data. It's shows our physio. Our new coach Pavo he sees everything after every single practice and comes up to us and says hey you're not running. That's something you can't shy away from. In the past you might have been like I was running but now there's evidence to back it up. So we know how fit we are because see the numbers."
All matches will be played at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre according to the AFC Web site.
John Matkin added, "We can beat pretty much anybody on any given day especially in these games. We go in with an underdog and a chip on our shoulder and we just hope to try and do our best or get an upset against one of the bigger teams. We always go out there trying to win no matter who the opposition is and right now we're just going to try and do our best in China and try and get some victories."

Evans said, "I think the thing that we can use at our advantage the most is the challenges that we have overcome. As a team we have gone through do much. We have gone through a head coach change. We've gone through Guam's pandemic rules. We've gone through a lot. Going through some hardships together definitely brings people together and so we need to lean on that and we need to lean on the fact that those kinds of stuff can make us a stronger team and show that we're a group of brothers instead of just a team that comes together and plays every once in a while."
