Giving Every Tuesday: J.M. Guerrero Elementary's National Elementary Honor Society
For this week's Giving Every Tuesday feature, we head over next door to Juan M. Guerrero Elementary School, where members of its National Elementary Honor Society have taken in part in everything from cleanups to donating much-needed items to our island's manamko' at St. Dominic's Senior Care Home.
4th and 5th graders who are part of the Harmon school's National Elementary Honor Society recently took part in some community service projects on island. Teacher Fely Bundang is one of four advisors who oversees this inspiring group of kids. "One of the things that we did in our school, we had a garden and it's the students who maintain it - weeding it, watering it, just to make sure it does well," she explained.
And on Friday, the NEHS members went to St. Dominic's and made a generous donation of toiletries.
"We did a little fundraising to get the funds for the toiletries by selling Jamaican Grill plates," Bundang added.
Looking to uphold the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship are members Ethan Munoz, Allison Mercado, and Keirah Baynum, who said their favorite projects include island beautification and the St. Dominic's donation.
"It makes me feel good because im helping other people in need," said Munoz, with Mercado adding, "It makes me feel good because I'm happy that im helping people that maybe other people can't help. Sometime I just like helping people."
Baynum said simply, "It feels good...because it's helping".
Bundang is proud of the students who continue to grow into well-rounded individuals - ready to make a difference in the community and in the world. "What it is to help in a community, how to be active, how to help, and that's basically why we're here. that's their role - they need to go out, take the initiative to do something, to make a difference in our community," she said.
