Senator Mary Torres will not seek reelection
After serving in the Guam Legislature for eight years, Senator Mary Camacho Torres announced, on Monday afternoon, her decision not to run for office this year. This announcement comes a day before the deadline to file for Decision 2022 elections.
In a letter to the People of Guam, she stated, "It's been my honor and privilege to serve as your senator... but today, after four consecutive terms, I am announcing that I've made the decision not to run for office in 2022."
The page-long letter continued with initiatives Torres will focus on, now that she's not campaigning.
"I intend to finish what I started and use the remainder of the term focused on my legislative agenda: updating Guam's Child Protective Services Act to prioritize the health and safety of our children, closing the gap on protection orders for victims of sexual assault, and developing home industries that so many of our people turned to during the pandemic," Torres wrote.
While not specific, she mentioned, "I will continue to advocate for the issues affecting our community that I remain passionate about... outside the Legislature."
Torres noted that it wasn't an easy decision and concluded the letter thanking the people of Guam.
"None of this would have been possible without your support... I thank you for allowing me to serve for as long as I have. I thank you for your trust," she said.
