Governor reflects on getting Guam through pandemic era

The Guam Election Commission will certify the results from the general election this week. If you haven't been following Decision 2022 - the top vote getter was the incumbent - Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. KUAM News caught up with the governor to talk about what she feels has been her legacy in her first four years and what mark she wants to leave behind after completing her second term.
"I think my legacy for the first four years as governor is saving our people’s lives and protecting our people from this pandemic," Leon Guerrero said. That’s what she says is her legacy in her first term as the governor of Guam. The maga'håga's legacy one for the history books as an unprecedented global pandemic hit our island's shores in the middle of her term.
"And coming out of this pandemic very strongly, in terms of our economic strength in terms of our financial stability as a government and in terms of lifting our people up. And helping them in their struggles as a result of the pandemic," she continued.
She’s referring to Guam’s first-ever unemployment program, which offered relief to displaced workers. And after gaining success in a rather nasty campaign between the candidates, she beat former governor Felix Camacho to serve another four years in office.
"Of course, I’m going to work towards strengthening our healthcare delivery system. I want to make sure that our people get the healthcare that they need and not have to go off island. Of course, creating jobs and lifting our people from poverty," said the governor.
Leon Guerrero has been pushing for a new hospital and medical complex proposed on the Eagles Field property in Mangilao. The proposal hasn't been well met by the original landowners,who just want their land back.
As for the four years ahead, the governor says wants to improve health care and the economy, onting, "So the next four years, the end goal here is to provide a better quality of life and a much more i think lifting up our people’s quality of life."
