More than 70 Talo’fo’fo' residents joined in on the public hearing to rename the village’s elementary school after two educators, Joaquina Mendiola Cruz Roberto and Rosa Garrido Roberto Carter. The hearing was spearheaded by the Guam Education Board, along with officials from the elementary school. Erwin Manibusan, principal of Talo’fo’fo elementary spoke with KUAM on how the hearing went.

"There was a number of thing that were brought up," he said. "One thing is just pride in the name. Talo’fo’fo is the village name and everyone is part of the village, so they say Talo’fo’fo' elementary school. It means a lot to them. There was a lot of people from Talo’fo’fo that were teachers, that were administrators, that did so much for the students, for the school and it’s just too many to name and instead of renaming the school. I think, by far, they were very proud of the name because it reflects the village and they felt strongly about not changing it.2:52

According to GEB member Maria Gutierrez, two were in favor of renaming the school, while about 40 were against the name change. The elementary school is still accepting written testimony to those that want to support for or against the name change. You can submit it at the elementary school or email it to Talo’fo’[email protected].
