Saipan hosts first surf competition

The CNMI hosted its first ever surfing competition on Saipan over the weekend called “Boogie Down At Obyan.” 16 athletes are competing for the top spot. Frank Ramon earned first place, Masaki Kitami was second, and Solomon Castro won third. Athletes were scored based on wave selection, degree of difficulty, and maneuvers completed.
Edward Manibusan with Saipan Surf Company, said, "We are just so excited for the future because, this surfing competition, we really put it together to encourage more kids to come out and surf because a lot of these guys who are out here competing this weekend are avid surfers, they have been surfing, for some of them, over 20 years. so it was just a great opportunity for them to come and showcase their skills."
The event was organized by Saipan Surf Company, Local Bones, and Salty Skin Pacific. They're hoping to organize future competitions with athletes from Guam and send representatives on Saipan to compete on Guam.
