Family of murdered Yap acting attorney general speak at sentencing, killer to serve life in prison
Francis Buchun will serve life in prison for the deadly shooting of Rachelle Bergeron.
She was the acting attorney general in Yap at the time.
Buchun was convicted of murder among other serious crimes.
In 2019, he and Anthony Tun Teteeth used a shotgun to kill Bergeron in front of her Yap home.
That same year, she was the prosecutor on case against Buchun that charged him with sexual abuse, sexual assault of a minor he knows, and illegal weapons possession.
Bergeron’s family testified during today’s virtual sentencing.
"The irony and the reality is that Rachelle loved Buchun’s family more than he ever did," her husband Simon Hammerling said. "She did more for his family than he ever did for his whole family. The court needs to consider keeping Yap safe and reflecting Rachelle’s life who worked for the court and the island. she really fought for what’s right.”
Her father, Thomas Bergeron also spoke.
"You must admit what was true," he said. "That you were full of hatred towards Rachelle and the law and you plotted to murder her."
The family echoed how Buchun stole their future with Rachelle telling the court he should not be allowed to see the light of day.
Buchun only testified through his defense attorney asking the court to show him mercy. He was hoping to only serve 10 years for his crime and even be allowed work release.
The court told Buchun they would review his case after he serves 30 years.
In the meantime, co-actor Teteeth awaits the court to hand down his sentence.
