Student chefs compete in Sodexo Reinvent School Lunch Cookoff
Seven future kid chefs from the Guam Department of Education showed off their skills at the Sodexo Reinvent School Lunch Cookoff today.
These 4th and 5th grades were among those selected out of 150 recipes submitted by their peers
They took to the kitchen at Jose Rios Middle School where they whipped delicious Spam goulash, Japanese curry, snow pasta, and even shepherd's pie.
Each competing for first, second and third for prizes tailored to their cooking interests
The event included special guest judges like Sen. Chris Barnett, and members of the Guam Education Board
Rene Suruda, leader of Sodexo Guam explained the competition helps both students and Sodexo chefs.
“So, either something they like at lunch or something they thought they could improve on," she said. “This is a chance for kids who maybe have talents elsewhere—talents in the kitchen to really demonstrate, 'hey, this is something I’m good at!'”
Fifth grader Shy’ani Borja of Wettengel Elementary School shared her best recipe.
“So, this is our Spam goulash," she said. "We have some ingredients: we have Spam, corn, and we have some little scoop of rice, and then we added carrots and onions.”
It was 5th grader Ellina Cruz from Adacao Elementary took home first place for her dish, "Tania's Meatloaf."
Fourth grader Quinsley King took home second place for that Snow Pasta and fifth grader Averin Reyes for that her delicious Shepherd’s Pie.
