Family doctor facing sexual misconduct allegations to go to trial

Ready to have his day in court, Dr. Ugochukwu Akoma walked out of a Superior Court of Guam courtroom Monday morning.
The doctor facing two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct as a misdemeanor. He's since denied the allegations.
Chief Prosecutor Heather Zona told Judge John Terlaje today, they'll be ready.
"It looks as though we’re going to trial so we’re preparing to go to trial," she said.
Akoma is still actively practicing medicine at Hepzibah Family Medicine Clinic in Tamuning.
The first sexual conduct complaint was lodged against him in November 2021 and another in February of last year.
KUAM News asked Zona if she was confident with her part as the prosecutor in the case and with the evidence in the case.
"We always have to be confident otherwise, we can’t bring our cases," she said. "We always have to have enough evidence, otherwise we can’t go forward."

But parties will first return to court on May 9 to let the judge know they are ready to begin selecting a jury.
Defense attorney Jay Arriola and Akoma declined to comment following today's hearing.
The charges were filed against Akoma last October, alleging he forced a woman to touch his genitals before sexually molesting her.
His accuser previously told KUAM, “I am still dealing with this trauma, and I pray that during the year no other person has been victimized by this predator who is a physician."
Now, this isn’t the first time the doctor has faced such allegations.
Akoma was accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward women he worked with in California, Arkansas, and Texas.
The Iowa Board of Medicine investigated and Akoma reached a settlement agreement given a warning.
He also then agreed to be chaperoned when seeing female patients.
Akoma has since said those complaints were attempts by his ex-wife to discredit him, adding that he has not been arrested or charged with sexual assault or harassment.
Akoma remains freed ahead of his trial in this latest case.
