Rota mayor unveils major initiatives in first State of the Island speech

What is the state of Rota? After 100 days in office, Mayor Aubry Hocog, the first female elected to that office, delivered an islandwide address painting a picture of the progress so far.

She announced, "We have been working aggressively to make our island a better place for all of us." Rota’s first female mayor and the youngest ever elected, Mayor Aubry Hocog delivered her first State of the Island Address after 100 days in office, painting a picture of progress.

"We have been working closely with our partners at the federal and local levels to secure funding for critical projects such as road repairs, renovation of public facilities, and the construction of new facilities that will cater to our youth and our residents alike," she said.

Infrastructure took center stage as funding gets green-lit for repairs after Typhoon Mangkhut hit in 2018. The mayor also unveiled a major green initiative.

"To plant 1,000 fruit trees around the island of Rota to include all residential homes so that healthy food options will become more available to our community," Hocog said.

The mayor says she wants to create a fruit park to educate people on the island’s crops and open up a Chamorro Culture Center. That includes cleaning up.

"We will be working to remove livestock, nonworking home appliances, and vehicles out of residential property so that their homes can be a safe space for them and their family," the mayor noted. And those major plans come amid looming austerity measures.

She added, "There is still so much that needs to be done to elevate Rota to a standard that we can all be proud of."
