CNMI Historic Preservation Office to restore sites

Posted: Updated:

The CNMI's Historic Preservation Office is kicking off preservation month amid a new effort to restore historic sites.

Rita Chong-Dela Cruz, CNMI SHPO, said, "Jim brought his expertise and love for the ocean to HPO and pioneered the surveying and recording of underwater relics." A tribute to a former CNMI Historic Preservation Office archaeologist Jim Pruitt, who recently passed away while diving in Guam, lost at sea. His contributions to maritime archeology remembered as the community marks preservation month with the theme "people saving places" -- just like he did.

"The commitment to preserve our past for our future generations is still held steadfast," he added.

Monday's ceremony was held at an old Japanese Police Substation in Dandan village -- one of many sites that will be restored. It will serve as a visitor's center.

Mary Sablan, CNMI DCCA Secretary, shared, "I am all for renovating and bringing it back to life, however, I know it will inevitably have some kind of modernness about it, once you renovate, nevertheless we shall focus on preservation of it all."
