Guam signed the historic Medicaid agreement with St. Luke's in the Philippines.
In a first-of-its-kind agreement, Guam's more than 47,000 Medicaid patients may be eligible to go to St. Luke's Medical Center in Manila for specialized treatment. Specifically, for treatment that may not be available locally.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero signed the deal today, which was 10 years in the making with St. Luke's president, Dr. Dennis Serrano.
"This just shows how partnership with Guam and the U.S. from a federal level and partnership with Guam on a foreign level with the Philippines just all comprehensively comes together to provide one comprehensive care for that individual," she said.
"It is a first for St. Luke's coming to an agreement with the U.S. government and the Government of Guam and the division of social services and welfare," Serrano said. "Obviously this is both historic and somewhat of a landmark agreement.
We are really really very glad to be of help and be of service because really service is the thing that we can offer. we are glad to serve, we are here to serve."
Medicaid will also cover referred patients' transportation costs to Manila.
