It was a rocky school year for Wettengel Elementary School, according to Principal Evangeline Iglesias.
"They've been stealing the vans and breaking into it since last year -- those were the worst break-ins that we've ever had," she said.
What's worse -- the break-ins at the Dededo campus kept on coming.
After nearly two dozen incidents already reported this school year, Iglesias got the call early Wednesday morning about a handful of classrooms were found in disarray.
"It was just scattered around the side of the room," Iglesias said.
This time thieves were only able to get away with a cart and snacks left inside the classroom...
The recurring problem is so bad that even the village mayor, Melissa Savares brought it up during today's Mayors' Council of Guam meeting.
"I took the principal around last week and she said it’s the students," she said. "They admit the next day they were the ones who came in with their relative but they can’t keep 9-year-olds, 10-year-olds in jail, in DYA for a long period, they release them back to the families," she said.
Savares told mayors the students admitted to being responsible for previous break-ins.
"When I see the kids breaking in, and I always look at the home just needs to help support these children. You know, I'm not going to go into details...of the cases, but parents just need to provide support to these kids and be role models to them," she said.
In the meantime, Iglesias continues asking the community to help out with keeping the students and the campuses safe.
"So all they all we ask and all the school asked of you is to please know where your children are at and provide them support and modeling to be good citizens of the community for the island because we need to thrive in this in this island and help each other out and...not hurt each other through the break-ins," Iglesias said.
