CNMI line crew on Guam to help restore power after Typhoon Mawar

"Keep them safe as they make heroic efforts in dangerous situations to rescue those in trouble on Guam," Father Rey Rosal said in a prayer on Friday at the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation office on Saipan.

A prayer on Saipan Friday as 12 crew members from the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation arrived on Guam Sunday to help GPA restore power after Typhoon Mawar.

CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios, "I know it is a lot of sacrifice no matter what, still a lot of work, a lot of hard work and I am very thankful that you guys are really highly skilled."

It is part of a long-standing agreement between Guam and the CNMI during times of need. The crew’s lead is no stranger to a post-typhoon response.

The crew's leader Michael Kukkun said, "The reason why we are going down is to help our sister island in the time of need. That is about…the equipment they have all the equipment for us. All they need is the crew." He added, "It was back in Pongsona I went down to assist too. So this is going to be my second time I go down and assist in Guam."

The team is in Guam for 30 days, and their stay could be extended. CUC could potentially send more crew members in another cycle. The trip comes amid full power and water services being restored in Rota after the typhoon.

Betty Terlaje, acting CUC exec. director, said, "Prior to the storm we had communicated with GPA and GPA told us they were ready for us. If Typhoon Mawar hit Saipan, GPA was ready on stand by and it took a turn and it started going more south. So I called back and said, ‘We are ready for you.’”
