She is making herstory - Dr. Anita Borja-Enriquez becoming the second woman president of the University of Guam since the presidency of Rosa Roberto Carter 40 years ago.
Borja-Enriquez's journey began in the village of Hagat, raised alongside female educators whose playground was at the Agat Public Library. That young girl went from reading books filled with histories to becoming a woman making history of her own.
With her being voted-in by the UOG board of regents last night, she's the first CHamoru female dean at the University of Guam in 1999, is now slated to be the second woman UOG president in the institution's history.
She said, the experience has been “very overwhelming for me - I’ve been on this journey, and all I wanted to do was make a difference in the classroom. It began with that.”
That passion driving her throughout her career, the soon-to-be 12th UOG president cultivating a deep understanding of those she says she feels humbled and privileged to serve. “Having the understanding of the importance of the early pipeline–helping to pull. When we pull our students up, we pull their families up with them," she said.
It’s a desire to uplift students and the wider community in Guam and within the region that she shares with her male and female colleagues. Still, her role as a woman in a position of power is not lost on her.
“There are so few of us, and I always tell my team there are so few of us, we always have to work together. We all have the same goal: to deliver public value," she said.
Borja-Enriquez also took the time to share her admiration for her contender, Dr.Mary Okada, saying, “My colleague-contender, is an amazing woman and a great leader. She’s demonstrated that. And I have so much respect for her.”
As for what she envisions for the university, Borja-Enriquez says firstly, she wants to strengthen the institution's core, by scanning the internal and external environment of and filling the gaps.
