The kind gestures to help the island get back on its feet can be felt as far away as Overland Park in Kansas. A group of girls ages 5-7 years old sold cool treats to raise funds for relief efforts.
No matter the distance, in some shape or form, people of all ages are wanting to help those affected by Typhoon Mawar. Take for example Madeline Graham, sisters Nora and Maggie Nelson, and sisters McKenna and Molly Markowitz. The girls heard about the devastation from Lori Marsh Marble, founder of the non-profit Be Heartfelt and former resident of Guam.
"I spent a little bit of time teaching them about Guam and the culture, the people, and the beauty of the island," Marble said. Marble created Be Heartfelt a few years ago as with the idea that every child, every youth, and adult would know they are loved, that they are valuable and that they were created with a purpose and has done various drives on Guam. She explains what the girls wanted to do.
"When the need came up with the typhoon recovery, it just became a very natural thing that they reached out and said how can we help?
The girls decided to have a snow cone and popsicle stand in their neighborhood to raise funds for Mawar relief efforts. "It means a lot to me to know that I'm not just one voice, so it meant a lot," they shared.
She says sometimes she can feel alone in Kansas trying to share her heart and passion for serving the kids in Guam. A place she loves dearly, with amazing people who work tirelessly to serve their community. And then, there are moments like this one.
The sweet gesture of these girls helped purchase hygiene products that will be shipped to Guam and when Marble arrives on Guam in a couple of weeks she will have with her items too that will be distributed to those who need it.
"I'm prayerful that I can continue over the couple of weeks I can gather as much as possible," she said hopefully.
