The Guam Society of America and Guam Del. James Moylan recently hosted a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the 79th anniversary of the Liberation of Guam.

The ceremony took place at the world war ii memorial in Washington, D.C.

The special event included many distinguished guests such as ambassadors of various countries, armed service members, veterans, world war ii survivors, and members of Congress.

Moylan said he was proud to host the event to celebrate Liberation Day, and allow his colleagues the opportunity to learn about Guam’s history along with experience the CHamoru culture.

Acting commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric Smith and Wyoming congressional representative Harriet Hageman shared a few words. 

 "Hafa adai! Thank you, Mr. Moylan for allowing me to be here today, for all our distinguished representatives, all of those here to pay homage, tribute to the people of Guam, and to those who lived it, to those who were there, you have our eternal gratitude," Smith said. 

"We honor the sacrifice of those who died defending and liberating Guam, those in military uniforms and as civilians," Hageman said. "We celebrate the endurance and resilience of a people who were forced into a perilous situation and met the moment with an undeterred resolve that persists to this day."

Attendees were also treated to a performance from the Kutturan CHamoru Foundation and Uno Hit.

"In celebration of our national and cultural identity, in democracy and freedom, I am proud to share this Liberation of Guam with you from half way across the world, in our nation's capital," Moylan said. "On this day, we remember those who fought, endured, sacrificed, and gave their lives to protect our island hoe and nation. This day allows us to remembers the sacrifices of the people who came before us and to thank those who are currently fight on the front lines."
