GWCC member health insurance plan starts Aug. 1

Health care is important for everyone. But sometimes women tend to place their health on the back burner because of a chaotic life.
About 10 years ago, the Guam Women's Chamber of Commerce was established. It was when the founders all sat down and recognized there was a need for health care and they prioritized establishing access to group health care insurance for its members. Erin Loder, is the executive director.
"Career, families, and the demands of just our general day-to-day household," she said. "There is actual research that healthier women with access to medical care directly contribute to the elevation in productivity in societies that we live and work in.
We're proudly one of the very first to offer this benefit to individuals and sole proprietors as well."
So what exactly does the GWCC's plan entail?

"It is comparable to what the group plans are offered in corporate settings," Loder said. "Our plan actually closes the gap between small businesses that may have not be eligible to apply directly within health insurance providers but they also allow the members in turn to offer insurance to their teams and to their employees as well."
Although open enrollment wraps up on July 31. She does mention there are some exceptions such as loss of coverage or for any new members who are just joining.
Loder says the group is welcoming new members. Membership fees are pro-rated through the end of the year.
"There is a lot of mentorship opportunities, social opportunities," she said. "We have everybody from people who are trying to start and launch a business all the way up to CEOs around the island. Everybody here is a champion for everybody here on the island, and we all have to work together in order to rise as women in the workforce."
