Conditioning is something every athlete needs in their arsenal. It's a core component of the preparation that's done over and over, rep after rep after rep, long before the whistle sounds. It's the foundation of being ready. And some familiar faces in our sports community with deep experience in breeding championship-caliber competitors have created the Guam Sports Academy to take your game to the next level.
Coach Dom Sablan, one of the founders of the Guam Elite Basketball organization, told KUAM Sports, "This program is meant for athletes specifically in their offseasons to continue training. A lot of athletes on Guam, once their seasons are over, there's just no opportunity to continue to train at a high level, and continue to train with people who want to help them, as well.
"So we want these athletes to continue their sporting careers and work extremely hard in the offseason."
The academy has its roots in the hoops game, both from Dom Sablan and Willie Stinnett with Guam Elite Basketball and Coach EJ Calvo with the Guam National Men's Basketball Program. And they've built upon their international success to make their training regimen applicable for those in any sports arena.
Sablan explained, "It's been a combination of what's worked in the Guam National Team arena and what they've been doing, what Will and I have been doing with our club and out training program. And to bring it full circle. We've done several collaborative projects with the national program and this has always been a vision from EJ."
But proper sports conditioning is equal parts philosophy, venue and gear. And the Guam Sports Academy his hitting for the cycle with all three. "The facility itself allows for multisport training. And the trainers we have on board are really well-versed in dfferent sports. I think that's the beauty of this program – the trainers on the performance side come from different sporting backgrounds. So athletes from all across the board can come and put the work in," he said.
There's also the advantage of learning from the best, and from compsssionate veterans with a willingness to share knowledge about what it takes. "With our staff," said Sablan, "we've got guys like Jordan Tingson; scientifically, he knows how the body functions, so he's been a good asset. We've got former Guam National Team athletes such as Justin Andre from track-&-field, Evan Brown, who is a young up and coming trainer and a football guy. It's a versatile staff that we have.
Coach Sablan is well aware that no two athletes are the same, so the curriculum is designed with also flexibility in mind so that athletes can incorporate a training schedule into ther competition calendar.
So get in touch, get primed, and get ready for the next evolution. Because the academy is waiting to take you there.
