A uniformed officer sworn to protect and serve now finds himself on the other side of the law. Guam Police Department officer Peter Leon Guerrero was taken into cutsody after being accused in an attack reported earlier this month at a beach in Tumon. He was off-duty at the time.

Leon Guerrero is being held at the Department of Corrections prison.  He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.  Details of what motivated the alleged attack are still being investigated.

KUAM News has confirmed the alleged victim in the attack has since been treated and was able to give his statements to investigators. Police Chief Stephen Ignacio confirmed that both internal and criminal investigations are ongoing.  "I am aware of the incident that occurred while off-duty at a local beach involving a police officer," he said. "The criminal investigation was launched, which today led to the arrest of the officer. He’s been placed on administrative leave. The criminal case was forward to the Attorney General’s Office and the internal affairs case is ongoing."

"It’s part of the process of a criminal investigation. We do hold our officers to a higher standard. Unfortunately, when incidents like this occur of course we have a duty and obligation to hold the officer accountable and to conduct a fair and impartial investigations both administratively and criminally."

The chief confirms a second off-duty police officer was present at the time of the alleged attack. No word if that officer also faces charges in connection to the case.
