Jian Feng Li sentenced to 3 months in CNMI I.D. fraud case

In the NMI U.S. District Court, 37-year-old Jian Feng Li was sentenced to three months in prison with two years of supervised release for conspiracy to unlawfully produce an identification document.
In January, a grand jury handed down their indictment of Li connected to the illegal entries of Chinese nationals into Guam by boat. He was arrested on Guam later that month and brought back to the CNMI for related charges.
At Wednesday’s sentencing hearing on Saipan, Assistant U.S. Attorney Albert Flores described Li as a frontline “street broker” who received $4,600 as part of a scheme to obtain three fraudulent driver’s licenses. Li’s attorney David Banes said that he only kept $100 of it.
Li, who spoke through an interpreter, told the court that he knows what he did was wrong and accepted responsibility. He told the chief judge that he was trying to make a living to support his wife and kids on Saipan, who were also in the courtroom.
Li, who is likely to be deported after serving time, was immediately taken into custody by U.S. Marshals. He was given credit for the 22 days he already served.
Li is set to appear in Guam Superior Court on August 29 for related charges.
