First responder testifies in Hagat shooting trial

Trial continued for murder defendant Nathan Ojeda, who appeared before Presiding Judge Alberto Lamorena earlier today.
Ojeda is accused of shooting Anthony "AJ" Mendiola in front of Mendiola’s home in the southern village of Hagat.
Witness for the protection was Guam Fire Department Firefighter Andrew Escamilla who was an EMT at the time and one of the responders who treated Mendiola at the scene.
He describes the scene as “emotionally charged” and Mendiola was already lying on the ground, bleeding but conscious.

Escamilla: We got down, brought down our trauma kit," Escamilla testified. "We saw that the person was awake and in distress, there was another gentlemen applying and holding pressure, we couldn’t see what it was the patient was wearing a shirt, so we had to cut the shirt to get better visuals.
Prosecutor Basil O'Mallan: You cut the shirt off?
Escamilla: Yes sir.
O’Mallan: What did you see?
Escamilla: I don’t have perfect recall but there was an injury on the abdomen and when we rolled him over there was an injury on the back.
He saw the bullet when he and his team lifted Mendiola.
Escamilla: Not immediately, I don’t know if I’m able to expand on this. I didn’t even notice anything until I removed him and put him on the gurney that there was a bullet on the ground.
O’Mallan: Where was it on the ground?
Escamilla: It was where he was laying, around his torso.
O’Mallan: So it was under his body?
Escamilla: Yes, where he was.
Mendiola was shot in front of his home in Hagat on Jan. 4
Ojeda contends he was initially targeted in the shooting, but witnesses told police Ojeda pulled the trigger first.
Trial continues tomorrow with more witnesses and officers with the Guam Police Department expected to take the stand.
