Typhoon Bolaven is making its final approach to the Marianas and is expected to pass directly through or very near Rota.

Meteorologist Landon Aydlett with the National Weather Service on Guam said maximum sustained winds are 80 mph based on a 2 p.m. advisory.

“I want to caution anyone watching us from Rota if you have a period of calm winds and light showers or a dry period altogether, you are probably in that eye,” Aydlett said during a 3 p.m. Facebook Live briefing. He added, “So if you have those conditions, do not venture out because that eye wall is not that far away from you. It will cycle back around with winds and rains blasting from the opposite direction.”

He said residents can expect those conditions in the next couple of hours.

Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation said that water services will not be shut down on Rota as Bolaven passes through the CNMI. However, CUC has issued a precautionary boil water notice due to the turbidity caused by heavy rain on Rota.

A typhoon warning remains in effect for Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Guam is under a tropical storm warning.
