The Marianas is waking up to the tail end of Typhoon Bolaven as it leaves the region. The Category 1 typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rain to Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

Viewer submitted photos and video show the strength of the storm bending and snapping trees. But the the extent of the damage is still unknown as local authorities begin to assess Bolaven’s impact.

Commonwealth Utilities executive director Betty Terlaje told KUAM News Wednesday morning, “Crews have been working already assessments are coming in. We should have a better picture soon. As of now, mostly isolated issues on the power side.”

Some residents on Saipan reported their power going out yesterday at 1 p.m.  Rota experienced an island-wide outage around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan said that power for most of the island went out at 6:30 p.m.

Rota Mayor Aubry Hocog told KUAM, “We are expecting the governor to cancel typhoon watch and then once we get the all clear, our team will go out and assess. There were some trees that fell and we need to push them aside to clear road access.”

The CNMI governor’s spokesperson Frankie Eliptico told KUAM News that they will provide an initial report later this morning as agencies convene at the Emergenecy Operations Center on Saipan to discuss canceling of conditions and  issuing the “all clear.”

FEMA external affairs officer Craig Browning said, "The U.S. Coast Guard crews are staffing all necessary watch sections and actively working with on-island partners to be ready to conduct post-storm assessments and port reconstitution efforts once it is safe. I cannot speak to when or where those efforts will begin."
