17-year-old Liekeila'akata Iakopo is no stranger to the fashion industry. In 2022, she was featured in Vogue, walking down a Hawaii runway for a luxury brand. Now, she’s showcasing her brand as co-owner of Akata Swim, a recyclable swimwear brand on Saipan.

"This brand was created to give more accessible accessibility to just people who want to enjoy the water. We promote sustainability through our recycled swimwear. Every piece is recycled. And we just are trying to forge a new wave of sustainability in businesses in the Marianas," she told KUAM News.

The business opened this year. Their swimwear is produced in a 100% solar-powered facility in Indonesia and is delivered in eco-friendly packaging. The product is made using fabric waste.

She added, "Sustainability is a core value in our brand because we live on the islands and we are at the frontline of climate change. And though it is just swimwear it is more about the movement in the brand."

She said it is not just about the business, but a mission. "Overall, Akata Swim can be good business for the Marianas and really open up doors for not only young women but anyone as well who is interested," she said.
