In a generous gesture, Steel Atheltics’ owner, JJ Ambrose, has stepped up to support the Southern High School wrestling team by donating mats, offering them the opportunity to thrive and emerge as champions.
Recently, Steel Athletics underwent renovations to upgrade their gym and Ambrose shares that their mats are fairly new.
“We've only had them for about five years, and mats tend to last for about 10 years. So when I heard Sporty needed mats for the Southern wrestling team, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity,"
Ambrose recalled when he was in high school, noting that his team was blessed with donated mats and how his high school coach worked hard to raise funds to purchase new mats.
"It's so crucial to have a good mat area, especially considering the number of kids on a wrestling team. So it was perfect because those mats are 42x42, so it's more than enough. We were able to have our jiu-jitsu classes on there for a long time...so we're just happy to give back.”
Ambrose emphasizes that this is all full circle for him.
"This island has blessed me with everything. I literally have three daughters, my wife, the business, so many fights, so many fight camps. I owe this island so much; my life is based around this island. So it only makes sense to give back to it."
Don’t forget to mark your calendars as Giving Tuesdays is on November 28.
