“Rizz” is Oxford's 2023 Word of the Year!
This word has beaten out other popular terms like "Swiftie," and even "Situationship."
KUAM found out today how well the island community knows the word, Rizz.
It’s the slang sensation stealing the linguistic spotlight, outshining all other words with style and charm, Rizz.
The Oxford University Press crowned the popular term used typically to describe the ability to attract a romantic partner with 2023’s Word of the Year.
KUAM was able to get the word on the street about the Word of the Year.
With one island resident, Angie Dames, he’s unfamiliar with the word. “Rizz? Never heard of it. Never heard of it,” He said.
For Dames, Rizz isn’t a part of his vocabulary but for others like 18-year-old Terri Rose Ogo, the buzzy word is part of her generation’s lexicon.
In a brief interview with us, we asked if she agreed that “rizz” was the word of 2023 and she answered with a simple, yes.
Others describe it, “Rizz is like a way people use to get someone they want.”
Gen Z-er's gave us a lesson on how you can incorporate rizz in your everyday language.
Describing a flirtatious moment, Ogo gave an example, “Like…that guy is rizzing her up.”
Another interviewee, Khilley Fernandez gives her example, “Look at that guy he’s using rizz.”
Other examples given included a teasing manner like telling your friend that they have no rizz.
Whether you’ve got rizz or you don’t, the younger generation is making it clear–the term is here to stay.
