Guam students participate in Congressional app challenge

Today, the winners of the Guam Congressional app challenge have been announced.
With the annual competition inviting middle and high schoolers to develop and create their own mobile app, several students showcased their skills in coding and problem solving.
The challenge was judged by Dr. Leah Beth Naholowaa, Sherylyn Tablan, and Divine Leones Tumanda, experts from STARBASE.
Taking first place are four students from St. Johns school who created “Guam Medicenters.”
Kevin Choi, Kelvin Lee, Alex Shin, and Taisei Tagami all took home first place for designing an app to efficiently sort and list every hospital on Guam based on availability. The app also provided vital information such as contact info, address, and hours of operation.
Furthermore, the Guam Medicenters app will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol Building and will be featured on the House of Representatives website: House.gov.
The winning team will also be invited to the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in D.C. to showcase their app with other winners across the nation.

For the second place spot, another St. Johns student, Nytt Sharma won for his app, “Guamunity.”
The app was designed to help people in communities connect, get assistance, and improve their community. It can also help the Mayor's offices create a database of village residents to provide assistance to those in need.

Jaydie San Jose from Simon Sanchez high school took third place with her app, MiBuddy. By mimicking playing with a friend or a pet, users are able to play games, feed, and react to gestures.
Guam Delegate James Moylan said, “I am excited to see the talent and ingenuity demonstrated by our young people in Guam. TheCongressional App Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and put their innovative ideas into practice.
