GPD: Accused Tumon shooter dead, getaway driver in custody
The man accused of pulling the trigger that claimed the life of a tourist in Tumon is dead.
The suspect was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a parked car in Yona Tuesday night. Guam police are not releasing his name until his family is notified.
Detectives got a break in the case six days into the investigation after a concerned citizen tipped them off.
Police also reviewed surveillance footage from about 20 Tumon businesses, which captured the suspect’s silver Toyota 4-Runner taking off from the area on Jan. 4.
Investigators are looking into whether the gun found on the suspect could also be the murder weapon.
“We are not sure yet, but there may be information that it may be,” said GPD Chief Stephen Ignacio during a press conference held at the police headquarters in Tiyan late Tuesday. “There’s other scientific examinations that need to be conducted to see if there is direct correlation between the two.”
The second suspect, who authorities identified as the getaway driver, is 26-year-old Stefan Keanu Paulino Camacho.
Authorities found Camacho at a gameroom in Yona, along with the SUV used in the alleged armed robbery.
Camacho is facing charges in connection to the murder and robbery, Ignacio said.
As KUAM reported, the victim was celebrating his retirement with his wife when the couple was approached while walking along Gun Beach Road in Tumon last Thursday.
Investigators said Camacho allegedly pulled up from behind when the unnamed suspect grabbed the woman’s bag, which contained a cell phone and credit cards, before the suspect shot and killed her husband.
The couple was on vacation from Korea at the time.
“I believe [the family] had departed the island already,” he said. “I did notify the Korean Consulate who has direct contact with the victim’s family.”
Police add Camacho was previously arrested on charges of assault and disorderly conduct, while the unnamed suspect has a criminal record for illegal drug possession and an active warrant of arrest.
