The business community, family members, and friends are mourning the passing last week of attorney Peter Sgro. He was a two-time chairman of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, and one of the key facilitators who brought in Guam Regional Medical City.
Guam Chamber of Commerce president Catherine Castro is among those offering heartfelt tributes to Sgro. In a message to members she remembered him as a passionate and committed chairman who served in 1992 and again in 2014. She wrote, "He was very generous with praise for the work of the chamber, its volunteers and staff. He often met with members of the Guam Young Professionals and the Chamber Businesswomen’s Network. He was a mentor for many and his charismatic nature drew a crowd to our monthly general membership meetings."
Castro adds that he often spoke of his deep love for his family, and he was truly enamored with his grandchildren.
She said, "He often shared stories and lessons from his father, Peter Sgro, Sr.; his father-in-law, former governor Paul M. Calvo; and his uncle, Pedro P. Ada, Jr. That helped to shape the person peter was in this lifetime."
GRMC also paid tribute saying Sgro was the head of the foundation that helped convince a developer in 2009 to build the private hospital, which eventually opened in 2015. GRMC recognized Attorney Sgro at the grand opening ceremony for their role in making the hospital a reality.
Also offering praise and condolences was friend and fellow businessman Tom Tajalle, who says
"Peter’s unwavering dedication to justice, extensive involvement in community projects, and pioneering efforts to establish a private hospital stand as a testament to his commitment to serving others."
Tajalle continued, "Amidst public controversy and health challenges, Peter was known for his kindness at heart, his advocacy as an anti-abortion advocate, and his unwavering love for his family, particularly his children and grandchildren."
Funeral services for Sgro are scheduled for this Thursday, January 18.
