A Yigo home is in ruins after a fire ravaged the residence Sunday morning.

Guam Fire Department (GFD) units responded to Chalan Kadi Street in the northern village at 7:15 a.m.

Units found this 30x40 wood and tin home covered in flames. The family safely got out unharmed.

Still, Yigo Mayor Anthony Sanchez tells us they are devastated.

He said, “They had other family members there consoling them. They were really devastated but they were holding it together.”

The American Red Cross (ARC) volunteers also responded to the fire.

ARC’s Disaster Program Manager Ambrosio Constantino is grateful nobody was hurt.

“When we first got there, of course the first thing we asked was if anyone was hurt. We were told there was one person in a wheelchair. The lead [volunteer] there is actually a physician. Her name is Jennalynn. So she went there and thankfully nobody was hurt,” he said.

Still, it’s a long road to recovery after the family lost their home and everything in it.

ARC is providing them comfort kits and financial assistance for immediate shelter, food, and clothing needs.

Constantino said, “We have this thing called a client assistance card, also known as a CAC. Based on the scenario of the situation, we input it into the system that tells us how much is going to be in the CAC card, or Client Assistance Card.”

He wants the family to know more help is on the way.

“We’re still working with you. I’m getting notifications from people like the Salvation Army. I’m getting notifications from GHURA, Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority. We’re talking about getting some food to the family and trying to put her in front of the line for housing because now they don’t have a place to stay,” Constantino said.

The community can also help by donating clothes to the Yigo Mayor’s Office.

Sanchez said, “We are trying to assist them in getting them some clothes. So if anyone would like to donate to the Yigo Mayor’s Office, [clothes for] three ladies and one gentleman, he’s about maybe 20 or 21 years old.”
