Andersen Elementary hosts annual ‘Learnabration” event

Posted: Updated:

Andersen Elementary School is coining the new term, "Learnabration.” It’s a celebration of learning in honor of Black History Month.

From spirituality to health care and art, the home of the Dolphins are gaining enrichment on the significant contributions and impacts Black people have had and still have on the world.

Parish coordinator Ladonna Henson said, “Every area you can think of, we have made  sizable contributions, and the world needs to know.”

Alongside airman and artist Kennedy King and nurse Markoya Taylor, they presented at the elementary school today.

“I was inspired to do this because there weren’t many things that went on in my school geared toward Black history and positive empowerment for Black people,” Henson said.

She added, “It’s part of my responsibility....to teach our children about their rich heritage and the positive as well as the negative aspects of it.”

It’s a responsibility to ensure the strides made by those before them aren’t erased.

“Alma Woodsey Thomas. She is one of the very few African American painters…specially oil paint, which is the medium she uses,” King said.

It's a celebration of Black culture, voices, and history that transcends a one-month distinction.

Taylor added, “Black History is yearly; it’s every day. I am Black History. She’s Black History. She’s Black History. So when you look at me, when you look at them, you see Black History.”
