Biden wins CNMI’s first Democratic presidential primary

Posted: Updated:

President Joe Biden won the CNMI’s first Democratic Presidential Primary with 93 out of the total 99 votes cast in the week-long event. The official results were announced on Saipan as polls closed Tuesday night.

Jason Palmer received 4 votes, Marianne Williamson received 2 votes, and Dean Phillips did not receive any votes.

Of the 99 Democratic voters, 40 are from Saipan, 27 are from Tinian, and 32 are from Rota.

The NMI’s primary is described as the “youngest in the nation.”

“We do not get to vote for president, so the Democratic Primary gives us a chance to ensure that, at the very least, our voices all the way out here in the islands are heard by the national party,” said NMI Democratic Party Chair Jonathan Cabrera.

The CNMI has 11 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention and party representatives will attend the event from August 19-22  in Chicago, Illinois.
