Dededo Mayor's Office hosts egg hunt, unveils donated exercise equipment at Lencho Park
Guam's most populous village is always bustling with activity. And this past weekend, Lencho Park at the Santa Barbara loop in Dededo was the place to be, treating island children to a lively Easter egg hunt. "It's for the children," said Mayor Melissa Savares. "They're on Spring Break, and they're with their families and this is a time where the parents bring them out and they can run loose and have fun."
3,000 hard-boiled eggs and as many plastic eggs were prepared for kids and spread liberally around the play areas. "It's very colorful here!" proudly proclaimed Peter Benavente, the village's vice mayor.
The event also welcomed new exercise equipment to the park, donated by the Korean Association of Guam for Dededo's “Healthy Community” initiative.
Mayor Savares commented, "The equipment is basically for the adults, so we have the playground with the swingsets for the children, and we're going to be installing more playground equipment in the future in the next coming months. But specifically, the exercise equipment is for our seniors. It's next to our senior center, so during the daytime our seniors can use it. The families come out at night, and so it's about good health in our community."
And the scores of those who helped made it happen as a symbol of positivity, safety, joy, northern pride, and of the village.
Benavente added, "We've got a great team here at the Dededo Mayor's Office - our staff, our Municipal Planning Council members, the mayor, and our community partners - there was a lot of planning into events. We just come together as one and come up with a great plan and for the community of Dededo."
And for those people, there's always evidence that you've made a difference, as one staffer showed us his hands, temporarily (but happily) stained with Easter egg dye.
