Special prosecutor disqualified in prison contraband case
The Superior Court granted a defendant's request to disqualify a prosecutor in a prison contraband case
The case involves Theresa Blas, who was charged twice with promoting major prison contraband.
The motion, which was approved by Superior Court Judge Maria Cenzon Tuesday was to disqualify Assistant Attorney General Joseph McDonald from the May 2023 case due to conflict.
According to court documents, it stated that McDonald should not be serving as both a special prosecutor in this case and a criminal defense attorney in other cases.
As we reported, co-defendant Victoria Agulto was heard over the prison’s pay-telephone system talking to a prisoner about the alleged scheme to smuggle in the drugs, tobacco, a glass pipe, and vape pens into the local prison.
The pair allegedly planned to conceal the contraband in a mustard container.
The case also involved now former Department of Corrections officer Travis Venus who was fired from the job after admitting to his part in the alleged smuggling.
