Cannabis can be a controversial topic for some. While legalized for both medicinal and recreational use on Guam, certain issues persist, such as the ongoing battle of having a lab in place to test the plants ahead of consumer sales.
The local hold-ups are now met with potential risks pointed out in recent Danish and British studies now making its way to the U.S.
The studies suggest a link between heavy marijuana use and certain health concerns.
While research is still ongoing, one study found daily use of high potency marijuana with over 15% THC resulted in five times the risk of psychosis.
Another study found nearly half of patients with cannabis-induced psychosis went on to be diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
The worry comes as there’s been greater consumer demand for more powerful weed.
While this recent study said that marijuana has increased negative effects in mental psychosis like depression, anxiety and even bipolar disorder, island community members say otherwise.
Hagat resident Jeanenne Codero said cannabis has helped her family.
“I hear stories from families in the states about cannabis and how they react, taking it,” said Codero.
KUAM asked to expand and she said, “They actually feel better about their illnesses and are able to actually eat.”
Dededo resident Miguel Rosario echoed a similar experience.
“No, I don’t think so, especially from what i’ve been around and seen, no not really…For possibly anxiety, i’ve actually seen people get over their anxiety but I’ve never seen negative effects from having too much or using too much of that one,” said Rosario.
And from a medical standpoint, Yona resident Kenneth Muna said that if he had any adverse effects from it, he would go about it like any other medication.
He said, “I don’t do those but if I have that problem and the doctor prescribes me and I try it and and it doesn’t make me feel, then I’ll stop taking it.”
