It was a productive and educational day for members of the Congressional Delegation who arrived on Guam late Thursday evening.

Led by Congressman Mike Bost, the Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, and Congressman Sam Graves, the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the delegation had briefings throughout the day, which were focused on various facets.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, and several of her cabinet members met with the CODEL and discussed various issues facing our community, from healthcare to the shortage of labor, along with concerns at the Port Authority of Guam.

The CODEL then received briefings with the Joint Region Marianas, and these topics ranged from housing concerns to the Defense Access Roads, along with the cost of airline travel, which island residents face.

This was followed by briefings with the Naval Hospital of Guam and the CBOC on issues affecting Guam veterans, including opportunities to expand care.

The Coast Guard took the CODEL to see the damages at the glass breakwater, along with a window tour of the Port Authority of Guam, as these are vital components of military readiness, the impact on shipping and the cost of our goods, along with economic activity for our island.

“These CODEL’s are a great learning experience for Members of Congress, as they get to see first-hand the challenges our community faces daily. While it is easy to read up about Guam, or view online activity, it is another experience to land here and hear real stories from many in the community. Unfortunately, their trip is short, but it was productive, and we look forward to continuing these conversations when we all get back to D.C.,” stated Delegate Moylan.

The delegation consisted of Chairman Bost and Graves, along with Congressman David Rouzer, Troy Nehls, and Mark DeSaulnier. They were also accompanied by key staff of both committees, including Directors and Deputy Directors, who are working on their report for presentation to their respective committee chairpersons.

“We are optimistic with the deliverables. Our office has been actively engaged in the veteran issues and will work with the committee and the Department of Veterans Affairs to prioritize the process to get expanded care for veterans at the Naval Hospital. There is also much interest in funding the breakwater repairs, along with seeking a waiver with the Defense Access Roads. I thank both Chairman, and the other Members for their commitment in not just visiting Guam but assisting in their capacity. The work is far from over, but this CODEL has been good for Guam,” added Delegate Moylan.
